Taking Our Life’s Journey and Staying Food Allergy Safe on Our Blog

We are taking you on our journey through life with a busy family, healthy eating, and managing food allergies all at the same time.
We are a family that is Dairy, Egg, Peanut, and Tree Nut free at this time. Our “list” use to be MUCH longer. Thankfully in our son’s short 9 years of life many have been eliminated from his “can’t have” list.
Our son is allergic to touch not just consumption. We are extremely vigilant with his food allergies in simple everyday life.
We or observant of everything at all times from food, to friends and family, to surroundings, outings, and so much more. This picture just about sums it up in a “nut”shell, no pun intended. *wink
He was dx’ed at age 6 months when he went into anaphylactic shock while eating baby food. We have never in our life been more scared than we were at that moment. Watching your child go through an anaphylactic reaction and not know if they will survive or not is something we never want to go through again. Thankfully for his 9 years of life that was the only time we have had to deal with an anaphylactic reaction. I give props to our family for always being on top of his allergies and keeping him safe. After many doctor visits, tests, researching, seeing a dietician, and taking those first trips to the grocery store, and relearning how to cook it soon became everyday life for us. One of the hardest parts and still is today is friends, family, and strangers not understanding what a food allergy is. This is where we has a family have always just simply educated others the best we can and hope they “get it”. Hope they truly understand that YES 1 drop of that egg will take his life, 1 sip of the milk will take his life. We have lost many friends and some family along the way that just don’t “get it” this is ok, it hurts but it is ok. We will always live for our family and our children no matter what it takes.

At age 3 our son was also Dx’d with EE aka Eosinophilic Esophagitis. This was a DX that we didn’t think would ever come. Finally we had an answer to his failure to thrive and CONSTANT throwing up.
Again after learning about EE and find his triggers through elimination diets we have his EE under control now 6 years later and he is a HEALTHY happy little man.

We teach our children to always self advocate. Our daughter has JRA aka Juvenile Rheumatory Arthritis. Just because are children have disabilities does not make them any different from any other child. We expect and teach them to go through life just like anyone else. They learn, get in trouble, have fun, and enjoy life just like anyone else. Yes, we may do things a bit different based on our needs. But we still live life. Nothing can stand in their way from dreaming and dreaming BIG and succeeding in all they do.

Due to the nature of our son’s allergies we decided to school him from home. This was an interesting venture. I was NOT a teacher. I felt I couldn’t do it. How in the world would we make this happen to keep him safe? Thankfully in today’s world we have online schooling. It is the same education, standards, testing that any child that attends a brick and mortar school gets. We just simply do it at home. Our two other children do attend a traditional brick and mortar school. I am extremely grateful for the technology we have in today’s world and being about to offering him schooling in this capacity.

On this blog you will watch us learn and grow as a family while teaching our son how to make it through life with food allergies. He will be blogging along the way as well. What a great teaching tool for him and a great way for other food allergies families to learn through our family and our son. See yet again THANKFUL for technology.

On our blog you will not see us recommend any food products by name. We will show you what we use via pictures and words. But they only way to ensure your loved one is protect is to research your products. Every person’s allergies are different. We do not feel comfortable saying “use this product” etc, you must know the product is safe for you before you use it. READ LABELS EVERY SINGLE TIME. Even if you have bought a product 100 times read the label every single time. I can not begin to tell you how many times products we have bought for years all of the sudden change how it produced and now will include one of our allergens. Call the manufacture EVERY SINGLE TIME you have a question. Get all answers before feeding something to your loved one with food allergies.

We welcome you on our journey! We are excited to share with you some amazing recipes and life ventures! Jump aboard and enjoy the ride!
